Preparing for Home-Based ABA Therapy
Home-Based ABA therapy can be convenient but it’s important your home is prepared properly to enable the ABA therapist to provide the best care possible.
Dedicated Space
It is best to designate a room or specific space in your home to ABA therapy sessions that is free of distractions. For example, a space without a TV or other electronic devices. It is best to utilize the same space for every session to promote consistency and allow your child to feel comfortable within that space. You can discuss which areas would work best with your Board Certified Behavior Analyst when they first arrive in your home.
Tools
It is recommended that your child has a child-sized table and chairs to ensure a comfortable learning environment. It is imperative to have materials that are developmentally appropriate. Your ABA therapist may utilize sensory tools, preferred reinforcers, puzzles, or other toys during therapy sessions. It is best for these to be put away so your child cannot access them at other times. These should remain specific to therapy so they do not become overused or less efficient in future sessions.
Help Us Decrease Distractions
Caregivers, parents, and siblings can go about their normal routines in the home. It’s not necessary for everyone to be quietly sitting in separate rooms until therapy is over. We encourage parents to observe and participate in ABA therapy and your Board Certified Behavior Analyst will review expectations with you.
Be Available
You do not need to be physically present in the same room while your ABA therapist and child are in a session. However, we are not babysitters. There must always be a responsible adult present in the home and available in case we would like to bring you into the session.
If you’re looking for ABA therapy for your child, but are not sure if Home-Based therapy is the best option, our specialists are here to help.
